Participation, since 2013, in the international robotics competition: “RoboCup”

CPE Lyon has been a contestant in the RoboCup competition since 2013, especially in the “@home” league, one of the major leagues in this unmissable international competition in robotics.

The objective is to think of future service robots, which can complete apparently simple actions (interact with humans, handling objects etc.) but in a complex and changing environment (homes, restaurants, etc.).

RoboCup 2016

There are both commercially-available robots (for example, the Pepper robot) and «home-made» robots which compete in arenas representing places in the home (bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc.). The tasks are varied including ensuring the service in a restaurant or having a dialogue or interacting with a human-being.

Being part of the RoboCup enables CPE to give the best courses in robotics, whether it is for the specialization in service robotics but also in the other specializations in Digital Science.

The 2017 competition was in Japan. Fabrice Jumel, researcher-teacher at CPE Lyon, was part of the organization committee both as judge and organizer. He was also elected on to the technical committee of the Robocup@home league, whose role is to promote the competition and work on updating the rules.

CPE Lyon is also associated with Bordeaux’s candidature for the organization of Robocup 2020 (more than 50 000 visitors expected).

RoboCup 2018 in Montréal

The CPE Lyon took part in Robocup@home in Montréal in June 2018.

New this year: the historic team of CPE Lyon was associated with INSA Lyon, the Inria CHROMA CITI laboratory and LIRIS laboratory (CNRS) making up the LyonTech team.

They have officially hired Fabrice Jumel, coordinator of the Service Robotics specialization and responsible for LyonTech, Jacques Saraydaryan, computing coordinator, and Raphaël Leber, also responsible for the Robotics specialization.

The students doing the following specializations «Robotics» and «Image, modeling and computing» as well as that of «Computing and embedded systems» have also been greatly involved.

This team competeted for France in this prestigious competition.

They ranked 5th aout of 12 qualified teams !

The RoboCup

The international RoboCup competition is one of the oldest and best robotic competitions where the best researchers in this domain, meet and compete in the different competitions. There are about 50 leagues i.e. with about 2000 competitors, and robots ranging from footballer robots to life-saving ones, competing in front of about 50 000 visitors.
